I'll be moving to Fort Monroe by 1 Sep 07. If I can't get housing on the base, I'll need to find a one or two bedroom apartment nearby for about $1300/mo or less. I'd like to be within 30min of work and also be close to restaurants and other activities in the area (single - can't cook). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

one complex i would really recommend is the Falcon Creek apts off Rt. 134 on the North side. That area is one of the safest in Hampton and 30 min to Monroe should be cake since it is close to I-64. The complex itself has garnered some very high ratings on this board. My mother used to commute to Monroe from 134 just across the York Co. line (close to Falcon Creek), 30 min was cake going on 64 or the back way through Phobeus on Mercury Blvd.. if you need a 1 bed, doing it on $1300 should be easy in Hampton.

Alan, thank you much for the advice on Falcon Creek. Apartments look good. I found out that I may be able to get bachelor quarters on Fort Monroe itself. If the quarters are available, I will try to stay on the post since it's cheaper and closest to work. If not, I think I will take one of the smaller two bedroom apartments at Falcon Creek.
