Hey guys! We are in Amarillo tx currently. I'm from va beach but havent been there in almost 10 years! I'm really stressing over this move. It's our 1st adult life big move. Add to it, 3 little kids, 2 dogs and a few snakes.
Anyways! I don't really know where to look for jobs/housing except for craigslist. Anywhere else I can look? How is the job market up there? Here, my husband is a guard in a prison. Do y'all have any in that area? He'd really like to try to just transfer. Also, how much would y'all suggest we have, money wise to pull this off? Moving a 3 bedroom house, 2 cars, and getting on our feet. I'll take any help or advice you guys can give me!

Hampton Roads Regional Jail, St. Brides (I believe that's the name), municipal jails, all excellent places to begin looking for correctional work.

Look on Craigslist, Hamptonroads.com, pilotonline.com

As for money I believe the generally accepted rule is to have enough to cover a few months of expenses. Going anywhere without jobs ready is always risky and not something I would do.

Plus, being from the area, you most likely have family here correct?

I never suggest moving without some source of income lined up.

As for stressing out, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The only things that have really changed in the past 10 years is 1) there's more strip malls and subdivisions and 2) Meyera Oberndorf is no longer mayor of VA Beach.

Other than that it's just like when you left it 10 years ago

No, all my family is here! It's a long crazy family type story lol!
And I was 17 when I left there so I was a typical teenager that didn't pay attention to what was going on around me, all I know is I lived the weather and it was a fun place to be.

Not to be extremely nosy, but curiosity asks what has appealed to you to bring you back to the area?

Why would you move without jobs lined up? What is driving the move?

In my opinion, getting a job in Hampton Roads is not easy. Maybe you and your family are looking for a change, but have a job ready!!

I wish you luck

I agree, it's best to have a job lined up - plus the cost of living is higher here. We moved from Austin to Norfolk last year, and the moving company costed about 12,000 bucks! And that was for a medium sized 3 bedroom house, we did the packing and moved our own cars.
Good luck to you.
Trulia is a good website to use for finding housing - both rent and for sale.
