my husband is in the navy and recently got assigned to the Norfolk Naval base. . .right now we live on the west coast so im not going to be able to check out the nieghborhoods before moving. i reeallly really really want to be in a safe neighborhood because ill be alone most the time and have a newborn. . .just browsing the internet for apps i found one on w little creek road that is around 900 to a grad for 2 bed 2 bath. there is one on Glen Myrtle Ave that looks nice too. but i need to be within a mile or so of the base. preferably closer. . .anyone know?

For apartments, you should consider Ghent. Driving on Hampton is no fun but you will avoid bad highways or tunnels. I'd consider it a safe neighborhood, although it has it's fair share of questionable individuals.

Most of the really safe/suburban type places are not located near the base. Larchmont is nice but is mostly houses, and they are pretty pricey.
