This is a cool project. Bonus points for using the word "pocket" in your overview, I used to talk about "pockets of 'hood" all the time. Should you update one day, I have two suggestions to offer: 1) to please use "red/green colorblind friendly colors". I can't tell the diff. btwn orange and green on your map. 2) You should add to your map a 5th color, like deep blood red, signifying the worst of the worst. Then you could click that area for a good anecdote. For instance, and I'm just throwing this out there, like the place where a mob of 100 youts and louts chased after two reporters from the Virginia Pilot trying to kill them. I can't remember why there was unrest that day, but there was. Anyway, innovative project.

IIRC that one occurred right by the MLK memorial (unfortunate spot) and occurred because the youts "took exception" to the young lady locking her door at the sight of the mob (which is interesting on a lot of levels since they ultimately threw a rock at the car and then beat them up).

Great work and thank you for such an informative map!
Can you possibly do one for VB too one day?

Kelli0604, the area around CNU is also nice and very close to Riverside Hospital. The elementary school in that area has a good reputation. I have heard many good things about Booker T. Washington Middle School which I believe is a magnet school.

Thanks for the recommendation. Other than deep red (which is a great idea!), what colors would be better for colorblind people? I hate to sound discriminatory, but I never even thought of that.

Now this is awesome. Shame that my new place of employment is smack dab in the red zone, haha, in Barraud/Bruce's Park/Roberts Village. Oh well, I'm hoping to find a place close by to rent and avoid all the commuting but we shall see.

Yeah that is a rough area, unfortunately. But of course that doesn't mean you'll ever have any problems. My job requires me to spend time in virtually every Norfolk neighborhood at one point or another, and I've learned over the years that it's really about how YOU act and less about the neighborhood when it comes to avoiding trouble. Sure, sometimes it happens to people and they get caught in a bad situation, but street smarts goes a long way in this town.

I lived in a red section for a little while.... on Fort Worth Ave. during the nor'easter of 2009. I kept to myself and was pretty sensible about things most of the time, but there was a gas station literally across the street from the house I rented and twenty minutes after the power outage people were trying to break in the gas station. Recently, in the news there was a shooting on Fort Worth Ave, on my old block! (300s).... can't say I'm surprised. Nothing happened to me personally other than feeling a little scared to go to and from my car after dark. To be fair, though, I was a very sheltered kid and lived there at 22-23.

Have you considered places that aren't too far away but might be a little bit more safe? I am moving to Riverpoint Apartments next to Depaul Hospital, which would probably make a 10 minute commute from the general area where you're working, FortAHolic. And I have had friends who have lived in that area for 15+ years and love it. Just something to consider.

Interesting map. I'm pretty familiar with Norfolk and I'd say that one of your yellows should be red and one of your reds should be yellow!!!

How did you arrive at these color zones? What were the parameters?
