My husband was just offered a job in newport news. I live in NJ now and $23 was enough to survive off but I was wondering if $17 is enough to live off of there. We dont live lavishly as my family has decided that we can live off 1 income if the pay is right, so..is that enough to get started with until I decide to get a job? Please help we would need a 2 bedroom apartment but it doesnt have to be really nice or especially large just something to get started with

Unfortunately that is a pretty common salary around here.

Doable, but don't expect to have an easy life if that's the only income you'll have.

I think you can survive, just don't expect to do much more.

If you work a job where overtime is available, you shouldn't have a problem. You are used to watching your finances from what I've read and obviously not above your means. Many do that then complain they don't make enough.

You're not going to get anything decent around here for $665 a month. You'll be in a ghetto.

^ that is not true. My room mates and I were each paying significantly less than that when we had an apartment in Ghent right by EVMS. I admit we did have a good deal but gems like that can be found.

$17/hr is do-able I believe. I put the majority of my income into a savings account and only allow myself to spend about $6/hr worth of salary whether it be bills, rent, food, leasure, etc... and at the end, i still have most of it left over unspent. I understand you have a family to support, but I fell you guys can survive temporarily on it.

We are looking for something between 650-750. The apartment websites i was on seemed to have some affordable options. I don't know the area well but the apartments are nice looking. In nj 665 is pretty much the ghetto. Any info on goodish areas where the rent should be afforable

What area would your husband be working? That would make a huge difference. If on the "Southside" of the Hampton Roads area, Va Beach, Norfolk, etc. It might be harder to find a decent apt. for a good price, but if you are on the Peninsula side of the Hampton Roads area (Newport News, Yorktown, etc) then you will probably be able to get a better place.
