Hi all! I own a cat and medium sized dog and I'm debating relocating to the Hampton Roads area. I currently live in Northern VA and it's really easy to access great quality kennels, vet, and food, etc. here (though a little pricey!). Also, we have quite a few pet friendly events, parks, restaraunts, so on and so forth in this area. But Williamsburg and Virginia Beach seem like pet friendly cities - is this true? What about the rest of Hampton Roads? Is it hard to find places to take your dog out and about? or to get good quality (holistic/organic pet food) at a reasonable price? Does anyone have any recommendations on the best area/apartments to check out for a pet owner? Thanks for your help in advance!!!

Yep, my dog loves living in Virginia Beach. She goes to Shipps Corner where she gets the Queen treatment when we vacation or have to go out of town. We have some great vets in the area as well. You can walk your dog anywhere in town and there are leash laws and poop pickup laws, which we all like. The beaches allow dogs after a certain time of day and season. We have several SPCA's that love volunteers. You can buy special pet food at any pet store or vet clinic. We don't allow pets in the restaurants, though they behave much better than children at times, it's a health code thing.

If anyone has anything else about things to do with pets, where to get good pet food, or which is the best city to live in - I'd welcome the advice! Also, I was curious about the overall safety in the area (specifically areas of Newport News, Chesapeake, and Williamsburg). I'd like to know as much as I can before I relocate =)

This area is pretty pet friendly. Before Memorial Day and after Labor Day weekend dogs are welcome at public beaches and on the boardwalk. During the prime vacation season however (IE – the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend), dogs are restricted to the north end of Virginia Beach above 42nd Street and the south end of Virginia Beach in the Sandbridge area before 10 AM and after 6 PM.

There are many vets, kennels, and pet supply store (both large chain and small mom and pop) in the area. There are also a good number of dog parks. Chesapeake (where I live) hosts Bark In The Park in Oct and it is tons of fun.
