From the outside looking in, I've found that no one really gives a side-eye to interracial relationships in Hampton Roads. My son's uncle is in an interracial relationship (he's black, she's east indian)...and no one looks at them disapprovingly when we all go out up there (they live in Hampton Roads...we lived up there last year)

It depends on what area you move to. If I were you, I would avoid the rural areas like Pungo in Virginia Beach, and Hickory in Chesapeake.

I don't agree with above Poster about Pungo or Hickory. This is an area that has a lot of diversity and all the areas are diverse. You won't have any problems and there is a strong latin community here. Remember we have the military and they are from EVERYWHERE!! come on down.

Less than 10 years ago, A mixed couple (black man) (white woman) had a cross burned on their lawn. This happened in the southern part of Virginia Beach near the border. As a resident of that area, I continue to see racism.

Default MIXED Couple!

WHAT! Are you serious! I really don't there isn't a mixed couple in Virginia. LOL!! Thats one thing you don't have to worry about here, there are plenty of beautiful mixed raced kids running around here. i can't say that I have heard or witnessed any racism,as my son is biracial but in some parts of town usually the rural or redneck parts of town you may catch a look or two, remember that the slave trade is a big part of Virginia history and you still have some people with ignorant ways of thinking but either they play it off very good or it is exaggerated. You won't have issues here.

Yeah, you should be fine because all of my mixed race friends were actually from Hampton Roads because their parents were military. I haven't seen blatant acts of racism, but you might want to stay away from Poquoson which has around 95-97% white population and is occasionally known for being a little bit sketchy for non-whites.

Default mixed marriage

yeah, I am asian and my husband is white and we have been living in Virginia Beach for 4 years now. I guess there are a lot of military guys marry to foreign spouses ( Korean, Japaneses....) So you really don't have to worry about mixed marriage here.

Puerto Rico isnt exactly "foreign" as it's a US territory. My husband is of Puerto Rican descent and I'm white and no one cares. He's not very dark, but that's not the point. We lived in VA Beach in the 80's and it wasn't an issue then either. And it's never been an issue anywhere we've ever lived.
