A friend of mine will be in Norfolk next week for a conference. She will be staying at a hotel in downtown Norfolk with no transportation. She has a few hours off one morning & is looking for a way to get to the ocean. Anyone have any ideas for a way for her to get there that won't be cost prohibitive?

There really is no easy way to get there, unless she either rents a car or takes a cab, both of which are probably going to be quite a bit just to visit the beach (which is dead this time of year anyway)

She could take the bus, but just getting down there will be hours on its own. Once she gets there she'll most likely have to turn around and come back.

Tell her to look at things in Norfolk instead. There are some museums, a large mall, and she could always take the ferry to Portsmouth and stroll around Olde Town over there (although there's not really much there)

Unfortunately there's no cheaper alternative to renting a car. BUT there's not much going on at the The Beach around this time. There's a few restaurants open but there's nothing much to do other than walk on the boardwalk if the weather is nice

If she doesn't mind the commute and plans her trip well, she can take the bus. Here's the schedule:

$3.50 for a 1 day pass, exact change for driver.

If she's in Norfolk on business, a car rental should be rather cheap for a couple days and her hotel will allow her to park in the parking garage with little or no cost.

We tried to figure out a way for my grandson to ride the bus from Military Highway down to the Oceanfront. The route that traveled Virginia Beach Blvd had 61 stops and would have taken 1hr and 58 minutes! He would have spent half of his free time on the trip down there and back.

It's around a 25.00 cab ride, if she claim that as an expense, why not go that route?

Thanks for all of your ideas--I think she may go with the car rental plan.
