Hi,

I'm considering moving to VA Beach after graduation (in about a year), and I have some questions. Okay, a lot of questions.

My family is composed of me and my two children, so I'm planning on buying a small 2 or 3 bedroom home in a family-oriented neighborhood. I'm not interested in a McMansion, nor do I need to live in an affluent neighborhood, but I do need to live somewhere safe, and I want a good sized yard.

I've read that there aren't really any basements, but I'm wondering about pests, other common problems with homes in the area - the things I should really be watching for when I'm house shopping. Is mold a huge problem?

TIA!

Julie

It will all depend on your budget as to where you can live.

Some old homes will have basements, but they are a rarity. You will also need to worry about water intrusion if you do have one.

Mold can be present, especially in homes with crawlspaces. Obviously get your home inspected before buying.

Ants are a pretty big problem around here, and more recently there has been a lot more fire ant activity. Mosquitoes are also a big deal.

I'm not sure what my budget will be - it depends on what I earn. I'm thinking a minimum of 200 and a max of maybe 260?

I'm from northern Minnesota, so the mosquitoes don't really bug me - they're the state bird up here! :P

What about roaches or rodents? Do the ants actually cause damage, or are they more of an irritant?

At that price point you will have to look at the school district maps very carefully. I do not have any kids, so unfortunately I'm no help there.

Portsmouth seems to have the largest rat problem in the area. Every person I've ever known that has lived in Portsmouth has got rats in their attic or under their house. They all did live by a river, so that might have had something to do with it, but still, other people in Suffolk I know live by rivers and they don't have that problem.

Depends on the ant type. A neighbor had carpenter ants and yes, they can cause damage. Fire ants can be deadly for humans. Regular old ants aren't such of a problem, other than an irritant, especially if they get in your kitchen.
