Will be in/near downtown Portsmouth for 4 days at the end of May. Will be in a training class (at the Naval Hosptial) during the day, bu wondered if there were suggestions as to things to do/see...and places to avoid in the evening?

You should be fine if you stay in the Olde Towne area of Portsmouth. There's plenty of bars & restaurants. I've heard great things about Still, Still Worldly Eclectic Tapas - Mouth Watering Tapas and Classic Cocktails in a Speakeasy Atmosphere, Olde Towne Portsmouth Virginia. I'm definitely going there when I come home to visit.
