I am new to the area, and I prefer to support small, local businesses over big chains (keep the money in the community, better customer service, etc.). I am finding that to be a difficult task in Hampton Roads, but I am having a VERY hard time finding a locally owned drug store/pharmacy... If you know of ANY locally owned drug stores in Virginia Beach, or even in the eastern parts of Norfolk (since they seem to overlap a bunch), I would be willing to travel.

I would be interested in knowing about local businesses in any of the following categories:
Home improvement
Home furnishings (like a local version of bed bath and beyond, or pier 1)
Arts and Crafts supplies
Bake shop

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

Hillary

For the bakery you might try Sugar Plum which I believe is located on Laskin in VB. I have heard nothing but good thing about their treats. As for hardware stores you might try Taylors which also has a location on Laskin. Perhaps others might suggest as to the others you are seeking as I'm not sure.

I'm not sure where you are, but one of the pharmacies that you might check with is Lakeview Pharmacy, 4661 Haygood Road, here in Virginia Beach. Their phone number is 757-934-0533.

There's another one called Irwin's Pharmacy, they're at the corner of Indian River and Sparrow Rd (that's one of the edges of Chesapeake). Their phone number is 757-420-8418. They remind me of the old time drug stores. They have a small diner inside the store with an actual soda fountain. They deliver too, but I'm not sure how big an area they cover.

Good luck. I hope you find one.

If you have a Facebook, you should add the "Locally Owned 757" page. However, if you don't, it seems to be public and accessible if you're not even signed in. You might be able to find some tips on reputable local businesses.
