Hi everyone,

I have been thinking about relocating to the Newport News area in the near future. I found a cute little house in the online real estate ads. Is the area near 26th st safe? Or should I avoid it?

I personally wouldn't live south of Mercury Blvd. That being said I haven't lived on that side of the water in several years. Maybe someone else can help you.

Crime Watch - Newport News - dailypress.com
Do a search on this page for 26th street. I personlly can't imagine living near that amount of crime but to each his own.

To be blunt with you, 26th street is in the heart of the ghetto. Any numbered streets in Newport News are in the ghetto. Like Spaz said anything south of Mercury blvd is less than desired. There aren't any major stores in that area except for 711 so you'll have to drive at least 15 mins to go to a decent grocery store.

Default Just to beat that horse dead...

The best advice I received when we moved here was just what a few of these folks have told you, "Don't move south/east of Mercury, and stay out of the numbered streets". That's the "Bad Newz" part of Newport News. Good Luck!

any place where you have to lock your doors and have the potential of getting things stolen from your car is not safe!

That area is terrible. Newport News shipyard has had its office buildings shot at, cars broken into, and 3rd shift workers robbed walking from their car to their office. I would not recommend moving there, unless your down with the hood.
