HRT has some ride sharing groups. You can find some info here. 511 CommutingOption - Carpooling / Vanpooling / NuRide

Try posting something on craigslist. Also, that drive is god-awful so maybe there are methods that you can try that doesn't involve you driving. The megabus runs between Hampton and DC but the times are pretty terrible. Also, there is an amtrak that is in Newport News. Maybe that is a decent rail alternative?

The way they have the schedule now, I think a train leaves from NN to DC ONLY at 4something in the afternoon and takes 4+ hours to get there. And there are 3 that leave from DC to NN but only one after 5PM and that doesn't get to NN until after 10PM.

I used to work up there and come home on the weekends. That trip is BRUTAL during the summer months when everyone is coming to the beach on Friday afternoons.

I know, I just had to go last Friday and ended up taking country roads to avoid traffic. It was still about 4 and 1/2 hours.

Is this for a job... or just to get away for a day?

Making that drive everyday would be hell on earth. I don't think most people understand how far away HR and DC are unless they live here.

The train from NN to DC is actually really pleasant. The earliest train leaves NN around 9 or 930. I usually get picked up by the Amtrak bus in Downtown Norfolk around 745. The last time I made that trip, they were doing construction on the tracks around Richmond, so it was delayed a bit, but usually gets you there by 1ish. Definitely not a bad alternative to driving, in my opinion.
