Which city in the HR metro is your favorite to live, visit, etc., and why?

I chose Hampton. Now the last few times I’ve been in HR, I’ve spent the majority of my time in VA Beach on the Oceanfront. However, I’ve always made it a point to stop and spend a little time in Hampton, suspending my sanity to cross the HRBT. My sole justification is it is home for me and that city made up a bunch of what I am.

Northampton was not and is not the best neighborhood in the world but driving on Todd’s Ln just fires up nostalgia for me. Feel the same way when I go to family’s house in Newport News around Denbigh.

Objectively, I like Norfolk a lot. Portsmouth is the edgy mystery since I don’t have a lot of history there but find it interesting. Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk just have very little that interests me personally.

Norfolk is the most charming city in the area, IMO. It has a downtown, historic neighborhoods, and lots of the region’s cultural and entertainment institutions are there. It has warts too, but at least it’s a city with some personality. Most of the other “cities” are sprawling suburban messes, and even Norfolk has too much of that in its city limits too.

Norfolk by a landslide. I love the leafy old neighborhoods around the Lafayette River and on the west side of the city. I enjoy Ghent. Love the Hermitage Museum in the gorgeous Lochhaven neighborhood. I enjoy the Chrysler Museum. The zoo is nice. The Norfolk Botanical Gardens are a treasure. The city is the proud home of Naval Station Norfolk. Norfolk has its share of downsides, such as poor public schools. The previous poster Lammius sums up Norfolk and the adjacent municipalities quite well.

I like Va. beach the best because of the ocean, and bay, but Norfolk is second and a cool place. Va. Beach has very nice parks throughout the city, and nice area on the Chesapeake Bay. Lots of things to do, and a big suburbia city. My favorite part of Norfolk is Ocean view and the new Ocean View. Can you tell I love the water?

Norfolk has some charm to it but the bulk of the city is ghetto. The schools are unusable, public transportation is trash, bad neighbors are still overpriced.

I live in Va Beach and that is why I picked that above the other cities on the list. Too bad Williamsburg is not on the list. That is my favorite actually.
