I received a bill last month from a mental hospital that claims I owe them 180 dollars for transportation from my regional hospital to said mental hospital. Here's the first problem: They are charging me 180 dollars for transportation when I distinctly remember being handcuffed by a police officer, placed in a car, and driven to said mental hospital. My second problem is for 5 weeks I have been calling the billing department of said hospital requesting to speak to someone about my bill, and no one has returned my phone calls.

Here is my main question: Am I obligated to pay them anything if they refuse to answer my calls and questions concerning my bill?

Send them a certified letter if you want proof on trying to contact them, but for $180 it's probably worth paying. I got billed almost $900 for a 5 min ambulance ride! I'm all for not paying for a ride that you were forced to take but the reality is you probably won't win that one!

Thanks for the reply. I'm in the process of getting my medical records from the hospital and the colonial services board whom I just recently learned were the ones who made the decision that I had to go the mental hospital.

If I don't find anything out from them I'll send a certified letter and make sure I keep a copy. I just googled it and it says the USPS charges $1.85 for a one ounce letter with a return address.
