There were actually pics from the local paper (RTD) that clearly showed the smoke:

Fortunately the wind cooperated with my mini-vacation plans as I went to Williamsburg this weekend. I didn't see or smell much of any smoke except for about 30 minutes on Friday night.
Wow, what a picture!!! Visible smoke all the way into Richmond. Unbelievable. Let's hope the rain from the storm puts it out - finally.

1) Has wildlife been harmed?

2) Why is GDS called GDS? Is it dismal?

Some have been harmed primarily by habitat destruction while others have beenfited from the habitat change. Swamp fires are part of the natural cycle with species generally adapting.

2) Why is GDS called GDS? Is it dismal?
While today's protected refuge stretches over more than 110,000 acres in parts of Suffolk, Chesapeake and northeastern North Carolina, the Great Dismal was more than 1 million acres and included land areas as far east as Back Bay in present-day Virginia Beach, according to Deloras Freeman, the refuge's visitor services specialist.
Called "great," possibly because of its size, it was called "dismal" because that was a common term at the time for a swamp or morass.
