Hello All,
I live in Hampton and I have a problem with kids continually cutting through my property to get to/from home and school. I have asked them to quit, I have posted signs, I have called the cops several times and I have called the school with little or no success. Two days ago, two of the kids ran through my property again so I was unable to stop them. I know they ran because they knew that they should not have been there and if they were caught I would ask them to turn around. It seems as though the cops are either unwilling or simply unable to do anything about the problem. I will not erect a fence, because I do not believe that will solve the problem since the kids will probably simply jump over it. The slope of the land will make it easy for them to do so. I also believe that it is a matter of principle - you should have respect for what belongs to other people. If it is not your property, you should not be on it.

Has anyone ever had this problem, and if you did, how did you handle it?

Thank you!

repeated confrontations with not just the owner but neighbors dissuaded the teenagers that it was "their turf".

I would physically go down to the school and talk to the principal in person. Face to face always has a bigger impact than just calling.

I would put up a 6ft privacy fence but make it with those really pointy wood fence boards. Then put blackberry bushes on the other side. Or get a big dog.

Or a better more subtle idea - you could install one of those "wildlife" cameras - catch these punks repeatedly on film and use it to charge them with trespassing in this manner.

Ask a nice Cop to park his patrol vehicle in front of your house when kids get off school and ask him to scare them a bit.

If you can't beat them, join them! Set up a path and remember kids have been doing this for years- not that anyone liked it. Become the one that kids love and build a relationship with versus the one they hate and want to tease. Kids need more mentors in life. Take the opportunity that God has given you- lots of kids that you can connect with and probably make an impact in their life by creating an experience or memory. God gives us opportunities and I am so glad this is your issue- lots of kids vs missing a child, losing a child, or dealing with terminally ill children.
Keep them safe movingva, don't make the news! LOL
