Can anyone recommend a good doctor in either Norfolk, Virginia Beach or Chesapeake for the Gastric Bypass procedure? My mother would like to have it done and we don't know anyone here who has had the procedure done within the last 3-4 yrs.

Also, did you find your insurance provider easy to work with in regards to covering the procedure or was it a hassle?

Thanks!!

Sentara has a bariatric program, I suggest you start looking there. There can be a six to 12 month wait to get the surgery, depending on the insurance. They'll want to make sure conventional diet and exercising isn't effective before they allow the surgery.

I would suggest to get a recommendation for the type of surgery. Gastric is risky and if you go see the Liver and Digestive Specialist on Kempsville, across from Leigh General you may get some sound advice.

The first thing you need to do to even see if you're qualified for the surgery is get a referral from a PCP and then a surgical consult. THEN the insurance mandated wait begins.
