My husband got orders to Norfolk Naval Station and we are wanting to buy a house this command but really have no idea where to look. We've heard that VB, Chesapeake are the better places to live but what about Hampton, Portsmouth and Norfolk?
Could I possibly get a list of good/bad neighborhoods/areas in the cities?

We like our space..we want a good amount of space for a yard, our budget we would like to be anywhere from 200K and below but could go higher. Our son is only 6 months but with the possibility of my husband finishing out his career in VA, good public schools should be on the list too.

Thank You all in advance

My family was stationed at Oceana from 2003-2007 and now my hubby will be stationed at Little Creek this spring. If you are looking for good schools then it would be best to stick with Chesapeake & Virginia Beach. For under $200k you will mainly be looking at townhouses in Virginia Beach, I'm not sure about the cost of housing in Chesapeake. Hampton is nice and the homes are cheaper but the schools aren't quite good as the Virginia Beach area. The nice areas of Norfolk are really expensive and it's hard to find houses. Portsmouth is basically the ghetto.......
Good luck on your search

We just found a sweet spot in Portsmouth and it has the best bang for our buck, yes there are plenty of ghetto sections but all the other cities have them too,we have been looking and we have been threw them.

We where told that Chesapeake and Virginia beach have the better schools so those are the best spots to search, unforchuately Portsmouth has some of the worst schools in the area but the Christian schools are good.

Norfolk I've been told I wide mix of its got a lot of crime don't go in certain sections without a gun, then I discovered Mac arther center way sweet mall and restaurants and things to do!

Across the water from there in Portsmouth is supposed to be really cool to?
I'm checking into that soon as I can because I'm seriously looking at moving to Portsmouth.
