Hi everyone! My husband is looking at a job in Norfolk, VA. His job would require us to live in Norfolk. I have read many posts and looked at many apartment websites. (do far we like Meadowood best) I keep reading that Ghent is the best neighborhood but I'm not sure we can afford it. We have a five year old kiddo and currently live in Colorado Springs, CO. Any advise or just FYI on Norfolk would be welcomed. Thanks!!!

Ghent is a great neighborhood but most of the apartment buildings are old and pretty run down. The nicer apartment buildings are downtown. Living in a nice area of Norfolk is not cheap; this this all comes down to your budget.

Can your family really not live in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach due to the job requirement? You can get more for your money if you are looking for a safe place to live for a family.

I'm not sure I agree. Ghent is a historical neighborhood, so the buildings are older but I haven't seen many that are run-down. I looked at a few places there in a couple of the mid-rise buildings around Hampton Blvd and a couple small apartments in subdivided mansions and all of them were pretty nice. Lots of character there. However, Ghent and West Ghent, as well as Freemason and Downtown, can be expensive.

However, there's plenty of nice neighborhoods in Norfolk with great deals on single-family homes. VB is way overpriced in my opinon. In Norfolk, check out Colonial Place, Riverview, Lafayette, Bay View, Estabrook, Camelia Acres/Shores, Belvedere, and Northside. These all have great homes (lots of Craftsmen Bungalows, Cape Cods, and American Foursquares for good prices), generally safe, and overall more bang for the buck if you ask me. Definitely worth looking into, at least!
