I guess I can't vote since I don't actually live there.

I can say I would NOT vote for Virginia. My ex is an HR native and she was a great driver. She's the one who taught me how to drive a manual transmission.

BTW, are Canadians (Quebec) in the running or are they considered tourists? I remember seeing a lot of plates from "The Great White North" while living there.

I'm originally from Michigan myself, and have found that driving here is a lot more dangerous than in Michigan. I was brought up to drive the speed limit on our freeways (70mph) in anything short of a blizzard. Which of course sounds dangerous, but when everyone else is used to doing that too, it's not a big deal.
Here, I have to contend with tons of traffic, people riding my bumper, and others being aggressive (not to mention what happens at any sight of weather). Not to paint a bad picture of the area! I do like it here. Just the traffic is no fun, but that's what happens when I come to a city with a much larger population than I'm used to. Oh, and tunnels.

Yeah driving around here can definitely be sketchy, but I think a lot of it has to do with this being a crossroads of American cultures with different driving styles.

This whole area boomed in the 80's and 90's with influxes of people from all around the midwest and northeast. Plus the military keeps a fresh crop of aggressive young (mostly) males from around the country in the area. Actual HR locals (people who grew up here and their family has been here for generations) are not as common as you would think and tend to not be nearly as aggressive drivers (at least the ones I know).

It is like driving is a language and we have a bunch of people that speak differently trying to communicate around here. Throw in a fair amount of congestion as well as a bunch of bridges and tunnels... and you get some interesting driving experiences.

I actually witnessed a pickup truck with a giant Minnesota Vikings sticker on their back window today weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, swerving back and forth behind people, and even changing lanes in the tunnel. VA plates on this one, where they are from who knows??

Maybe people who feel the need to plaster giant football stickers on the back of their trucks just tend to be more aggressive. There is actually research that supports this. They call bumper stickers "territorial markings" and correlate them to aggressive driving.

This article talks about that paper but suggests that it is narcissism... either way, giant bumper stickers of football teams seem to be a sign that you should just let this person past (or box them in if you get a kick out of those kinds of things). haha

Bumper Stickers, Road Rage and Narcissism

I had heard about the correlation between bumper stickers and road rage before, but had never read an article on that.
Thank you for sharing! That made for a good laugh, but was also very interesting.

I think the part that urks me, are the cars/suv's and mini-vans with the family stickers on the back windshield with the driver chatting away on a cell phone and having no clue as to what is going on around them.

I'll agree with that, but let me add that for me they don't have to have the family sticker, it's anyone chatting away and not paying any attention at all!

The NY votes are making me LOL. I can't even remember the last time I saw a NY plate around here and plates are something that always stand out to me!

yeah, I see them from time to time but they pale in comparison to all of the Florida and NC plates. I really expected Florida to run away with this thing with NC in second, I am as surprised as you are to see NY on top.

Man I've had countless conversations with friends on this very topic, haha. I voted for Pennsylvania in the poll, but I think the worst is Ohio. More specifically Ohio minivans with bikes on the back and a luggage rack on top driving on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach in the summer.

The people who freak out at one of the tunnels always make things fun too.

I think it's probably a stereotype and people are voting based off that. Like I said, I really haven't even seen NY plates here in some time!

AHH! I know. I had one today through the Midtown. She had nobody, NOBODY at all in front of her. Not a car in sight! What does she do? Brakes all the way as she's going into the tunnel. Didn't surprise me, though... North Carolina plates!!

I actually read this great book about driving called "Traffic: Why We Drive The Way We Do (and what it says about us). Kind of interesting if you guys are into this stuff.

http://www.amazon.com/Traffic-Drive-.../dp/0307264785

he's even got a blog:

How We Drive, the Blog of Tom Vanderbilt’s Traffic
