My spouse will be stationed at Ft. Eustis. We're planning on targeting the Richmond, VA area for my job (10+ years HR Management with advanced degree). Okay with rent no more than $2K. Schools are a non-issue. Spouse would like the majority of the commute (40 - 45 minutes max). I would prefer less than 30 minutes. We will be renting.

Questions:
1) Pros & cons of staying East or West of I-64 (based on what I've read Rt. 60 is underutilized)
2) Thoughts specifically on Hopewell, New Kent and Toano.
3) Any other location recommendations?

We're visiting area between Ft. Eustis and Richmond in 1 week, and I promise to report back.

I made the Richmond-Eustis drive for quite awhile (from the West End to Eustis).

If your spouse wants the majority of the commute but no more than 45 minutes, your only good choice on that list is New Kent. Toano is too close to Eustis (you'd make the longer drive) and Hopewell is too far.

On good days, 64 is fine. Very rarely it gums up a little. I got in the habit of dialing traffic reports before leaving. If there was a wreck, divert onto 60. Didn't have to do it too often.

You can use HotPads - Map Search for Real Estate, Apartments and Houses for Rent, Foreclosures and Homes for Sale to search for houses. Seems to be a really good resource.

Thanks all!

Follow-up question: What's commute time from Richmond to Eustis? What about New Kent to Eustis? Recommended areas to avoid/ideal location around New Kent/that area to live..also, is New Kent different than Kent? Does New Kent refer to the County and the City both? Thanks!

Oh..what would Toano- Richmond and Toano- Eustis commute look like.

Thanks so much!

If you dont mind small towns.. My sister and her finace recently purchased an historic home in West point. The school system is good and the town is pretty darn neat as well. They live near the water and have a good neighborhood. Its about the same drive to Richmond and Ft. Eustus/Newport News. It might be worth checking out!

New Kent refers to both the county and the courthouse area. The Brickshire community in New Kent is about 45 minutes from Ft Eustis, about 35 minutes to Richmond. Nice community with golf course, trails, pool, tennis, horse track. Close to exit 214 on interstate 64.
One drawback is major shopping is located either towards Richmond or Williamsburg.

My preference would be anywhere in New Kent over Hopewell. NK is mostly rural , Hopewell has lots of industry...Its also an hour and 15 minutes from Hopewell to Ft Eustis !

Times don't exactly add up (e.g. don't try to do the A+B don't add up exactly to C! thing), but I have either made these drives a bunch or know people right now that do them-this is pretty close estimates depending on where in Richmond you are going.

Richmond-Eustis, ~90-100 minutes (this is from the far West End, to downtown would be a few minutes shorter)

New Kent-Eustis, ~45-50 minutes
New Kent-Richmond, ~35-45 minutes

Toano-Richmond, ~60 minutes
Toano-Eustis, ~30 minutes

Thanks everyone for the input/insight. I'll know where to spend the majority of my time once I'm in the area. I'll report back on how it goes.
