Looking to buy soon! Need suggestions on great family-friendly neighborhoods in Newport News, Yorktown, or Williamsburg. Do not want to spend more than $230. Looking for something in the range of 1600+ sq feet, 3 bedrooms or more, 2 bath, at least a 1-car garage. Some yard or outdoor space. Not terribly outdated. Open plan. Homes, town-homes, single family attached, etc.

Almost anywhere in York County east of Lackey is a good neighborhood. Open floor plan and under $230,000 might mean a townhouse. You might have to live with a house that's a remodeled 30+ year old house prior to when open floor spaces were popular. In my neighborhood in Grafton, houses tend to go in the 250-350k range, extremely safe and friendly.

There are many neighborhoods in NN that are completely safe (and nicer than many comparably priced ones in York County). The midtown area of Newport News (off Warwick, between Boxley and Avenue of the Arts) is completely safe, lovely and affordable. Look for neighborhood names like Hidenwood, Normandy Woods, Glendale, etc.). Also, the Riverside area near CNU and The Noland Trail are very nice. The Menchville area is safe and affordable and near (the very nice) Riverview Farm Park. Hilton Village is another nice neighborhood you could look into (although you might not like the surrounding area).
Work with a realtor who is familiar with Newport News--he or she will be able to recommend areas you'll love.

Williamsburg
Williamsburg has lots of subdivisions that are family friendly in your price range, low crime and good schools. Look at Season's Trace, WIndsor Forest, Scott's Pond, Longhill Station, Peleg's Point.
