This is regarding mostly noise! nothing to do with the military's economic impact to the area.

Most people here are fine with the noise, they knew about it when they bought their house. There are plenty of places to live with no jet noise, even in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Hampton.

Agreed. Most accept the noise as a fact of life in Hampton Roads and there would be no Hampton Roads without the bases.

Not nearly as noisy as sitting next to some cars at the traffic light.

People moving into the area just need to be aware of where the flight path is. I lived in Green Run/Timberlake and had little problems with jet noise. Living over by Lynnhaven Mall or Oceana is a different story.

Yes there would be a Hampton Roads, but it would be like the Jersey shore more then likely, just a resort/tourist area for bigger city residents of the mid-atlantic to come hang out at the beach and see a few historic sites.

Its actually not even really the bases unto themselves that would transform the area either, its more the complete destruction of the military related government contracting.

It takes an army of civilians to support the military operations, from trucking in the food, to fixing the ships, and repairing their infrastructure. Im willing to wager the support personel depending on government contracting is probably 3 to 4 times the size at least of the military presence itself.

This^ Without the bases and commercial shipbuilding, we'd be looking like the residential downtown area of Baltimore. NOT GOOD.
Twas what my grand pops told me.
