I am considering going to Old Dominion University next year as an undergrad freshman and I do not know a lot about the area but I have heard that some areas around it are "unsafe" If anyone has an opinion about this or any helpful information about the University or anything that would relate feel free to post please
Thanks

To make this easy I will use walking distance. The neighborhood North of ODU is fine, to the east can be a little iffy but mostly ok, south of ODU you want to stay away from. West of ODU is water

rtandc is generally correct. There are areas around the campus where you probably don't want to be walking alone late at night. The biggest issue has been people getting robbed and alot of that activity has happened after midnight. So, your parents are onto something if they say nothing good happens after midnight

This academic year has been a lot lighter on the "safety warning" emails and texts that are sent to the campus community, so the extra efforts at cracking down on the issues might be working. Also, an awareness by students of the areas that are best to avoid has helped, too. The campus is generally safe but you do need to be aware of your surroundings.

I wouldn't let a few stories keep you from attending ODU if it's a good fit for you educationally. Just be smart, be aware, and you'll be fine. Good luck on your decision. Let me know if I can answer any more questions.

They also have a new head of security person (not really sure what they are called). So I'm sure they want to make a good first impression and things will probably continue to get better.
