We'll be visiting Williamsburg soon, and are looking for ideas of things to do on a Thursday or Friday evening. We're an older married couple--probably too old for the bar scene, but might enjoy a concert, show, etc. Is there a local listing of events we should consult?

vagazette.com is the (very) local newspaper. You can look for local events there. The Fat Canary in Merchant Square is one of the nicest restaurants in Williamsburg and sitting at the bar for dinner or just drinks is a far cry from "bar scene," it is relaxing, quiet, and you will often find yourself chatting with interesting people.

Enjoy you visit!

Thanks. We're especially fond of sax music--any suggestions of a place where we could hear it (mellow jazz, swing dancing, rock--it's all good as long as there's a sax or two).

These guys do open mic down by william and mary. They get a lot of Jazz musicians and even have a jazz night sometimes.

Great suggestions, everyone. We just need one more thing to do on Friday night, May 4.

Doing one of the ghost tours is a possibility but we'd rather avoid the Colonial Village since the object of this trip is to see what it would be like to live in the city (not do the typical tourist things).

We're doing the open mic night at Aromas on Thursday and Rivers Inn Concerts on the Deck for Saturday. Any suggestions for Friday night?

We might go over to New Town, so if there's something in that area that would work out well. But, we're open to anything in the area.

Planet Full of Blues turned out to be a fantastic band. That was quite an interesting evening. If you've never been to the town square in Gloucester Courthouse, I recommend giving it a try. The square (actually, a circle) is loaded with quaint old public buildings that are kind of surreal. More interesting than the restored buildings in Williamsburg, in a way, since they've apparently just grown with the town. The original jail is particularly thought provoking. Meanwhile this outstanding band was playing to a crowd of maybe 10-15 people. Like I said, surreal. I'll post photos in a few days, it was a very cool evening.

We also liked Aromas, although I think I'll go back some other night than Open Mic night. Let's just say the singer was... ummm... interesting. To be applauded for having the courage to perform. Oh well, can't always get a winner and everyone's gotta start somewhere, right? We listened for a song or two and then wandered the street, which was entertaining in itself. The library on Scotland Street impressed us.

Friday night we were invited to dinner at Colonial Heritage. Now don't snicker, believe it or not this actually turned out to be a very pleasant experience in a mellow jazz band sort of way. Who would have guessed? The food was surprisingly good and so was the band. The dining room had that sort of country-club-with-oil-paintings ambiance, and the bill was lower than expected.
