...can someone tell me the proper way to pronounce Norfolk? Also, Ghent (soft g or hard g), Poquson, and Powhatan.

Love all these distinctive town names, especially Newport News. It not only rolls trippingly off the tongue but also wins my award for most unusual city name.

If you grew up here you don't pronounce the "R" in Norfolk, its "NAW-***, Ghent is simply "gent with a hard G, Poquoson, Go with "puh-CO-sin", lastly :"pow a tan" at least that's how I and most I know say them.

Its fun to listen to my relatives who spoke "true Virginian" . They would say "hoase" and "moase" for "house" and "mouse"

LOL I'm still a little wary of that second syllable. Is it ok to say Naw-FICK or does that sound affected?

Most people I know who are not natives but have been here awhile say Nor ***, you say it kinda fast and run together. If you are from here and usually of an older generation, they say Naw ***.

LOL! I don't see that happening!

Speaking of re-naming, if the push goes through to re-name Hampton Roads (again), I wonder if the name of this entire forum would have to be changed?

Nawfick. The last syllable is said so quickly it should sound like just the 'ck.'
