Again following Caladiums lead here are a few photos of one of the more popular condo communities in the Williamsburg VA area.
Braemar Creek, a very nice condo development surrounded by Williamsburg National Golf Course. The development has a pool tennis courts, fitness room and clubhouse. Its about 2.5 miles to Target, Starbucks, grocery store, etc. Six miles to Colonial Williamsburg.

Prices currently start in the $150's

Nice looking condos, and thanks also for posting this as it gives a good idea of what the neighborhoods in that part of Virginia are like in general. Looks like the sort of place loveautumn was posting about. Do they rent out any of these condos? Are there sidewalks so you can walk to Starbucks. etc? (Or... are the roads safe to walk on?)

A few are available for rent starting around $1050-1300. Sidewalks yes, nearest store is 2.5 miles down monticello. There is a bike path along that part of the road. There are numerous condo communities in the area. This happens to be one of my favorites. Some like Bristol Commons are a block from High Street with its movie theater, restaurants etc along with the Richmond Rd corridor

It's interesting to me that so many of the communities in the Williamsburg area seem to have been built in the last decade or so. Has there been a major growth spurt, and if so what's causing it? Also, what neighborhoods are older (from the 40s or earlier)? Are there any residential areas that are 100+ years old?

The Growth spurt here started in the 1980's. James City County was one of the fastest growing counties in Virginia for a number of years. Kingsmill was the first of numerous planned communities that lead the charge and many others followed. Reason #1, low taxes, #2, low crime. #3. Lots of things to do. #3 small town living with arts, culture, recreation.,#4 good schools. #5 low cost compared to the northeast. Although a large number of retirees chose Williamsburg, 50% of the folks moving here were coming from Hampton and Newport News.

The only neighborhoods from the 1940's or earlier are the areas around the college. They were built in the 1930's when many moved here to work for CW. Colonial Williamsburg was a huge employer during a time when many couldn't find jobs. Folks moved here from all over to work on the reconstruction of CW. There are virtually no homes except those in the restored area that are 100+ years old.
