Dominion Virginia Power filed plans Monday for a high-voltage line over the James River. It will have nine towers from Surry to James City. Several groups are upset about this, but Dominion says this option is about one-fifth of the length of the other option which would be across James City from the Chickahominy River.

So.... what do you guys think about this?

No one wants the line near them so what's the solution ? Upper county route would go thru Colonial Heritage, Freedom Park and the middle school and elem school. No one wants it there. They say we need it for the increased usage in the future..

What say you ?

Well, for now I figure I'm not an expert since I don't live in the area (yet). But I'm following this, since I figure issues like this are a good way to get a feel for the area. I have to admit I cringe at the thought of lines over the river. Ugly, and I wonder about the environmental damage this could cause. At the same time, a longer line might cause even more damage because of the amount of trees that would have to be cut down.

Why don't they bury the lines? Is it a cost issue or are there other concerns?

Does this mean the area is expected to see a lot of growth?

Thats what James City County asked them to do. Apparently the costs are MUCH higher.

Upgrades are needed due to Dominion closing some older generating plants in Yorktown and Chesapeake VA

Burial is always a cost issue. No one wants to bury anything that does not have to be buried. Primary reason why you still see so many telephone poles in the area.
