Having just moved to VB, I have noticed every morning one or two big cockroaches in my kitchen (dead as it looked like my cat killed them). Is this normal in VB? We live on a lake about a block from the Bay. Our house is only about 7 yrs old, 3 levels, no real basement, no dark wet places, and is pretty open, bright and clean. Is there something I can do to make sure they quit coming into the house, or is this just a normal thing for the area? The house is clean, uncluttered, and I can see no reason why these bugs are coming in. Where I moved from, one would see smaller german cockroaches only in the rundown homes - never in a nice clean place. Any ideas on how to get rid of them?

Just a side note - the property management company where I live is saying these bugs are just like spiders and not a big deal. She says we can buy some bug spray which will get rid of them. My friends are saying its a HUGE deal and we need to get a professional in to get rid of them. I just want to know - if there are one or two a day NOW, if I dont do anything will this get worse? Can I expect these bugs to be running over my countertops soon? Is it the property management company's responsibility to get rid of them or is this my (the tenant's) issue? I don't want to be the BAD tenant, but I also don't want to have bugs running havoc in the home I will be living in for the next four years (yes we signed a 4 year lease). Coming from up north, the thought of cockroaches leaves me with the shudders as the only time anyone ever saw them up there was if you were living in substandard housing and then they were small (half an inch long) and there were many of them. Here they are an inch to an inch and a half long, big and freaky looking.

Check this thread in the House forum:

//www.city-data.com/forum/house...etto-bugs.html

Go onto that forum and search for Palmetto and it will bring up other threads.
It looks like using boric acid will get rid of them.

Is this not normal?

Either way, no bugs this morning so hoping it was just a situation where a few got in when we were moving in with having the doors open for 8 hours!

I would also check around your plumbing and look for cracks where the bugs might get in. You might seal these with steel wool.

Well, no bugs this morning so maybe just some got in when the doors were open. Going to keep an eye out though. So far we have had a few snakes in our driveway, some crickets and cockroaches in the kitchen and many tiny tiny ants on the balcony. Guess its just something to get used to in living in a warmer climate.

Re lease terms, most folks do a one-year lease with an option to renew. Sometimes after the term is over the tenancy becomes month-to-month.
Four years seems like a long term for a residential lease.

Oh! Did not know. We are a military (international) move and I guess we HAD to sign a long lease. So far seems ok except for the big palmetto bugs haha.

And it saves us on rent increases (though in year 3 and 4 we do have a tiny increase of $50/m)
