Re the YMCA the answer is, "Yes."

Check out the website for the Peninsula YMCA:

And here's another Y in the region:

(regarding VA Beach) I've lived here since birth-40 years. I've watch it not only get way too crowded, but also the bad element moving in. Do yourself and me a favor-don't move here. You'd hate it.

Can I find a descent 3 bedroom rental home in a nice area for $1200/month?

How afraid of tornados should I be?

Are there any good/authentic mexican food places?

What are some of the better elementary schools in the area?

Is there anything important that I need to know before moving here?
Tornadoes are usually in the Midwest. Hurricanes are more of a problem here. There have been some tornadoes here and there, but there isn't much you can do about a tornado anyway except find a corner somewhere and crouch down with your hands over your head and pray that you don't get hit by debris.

With hurricanes, you get more of a warning, because they last longer and travel farther off of the Ocean, whereas tornadoes have a strange way of appearing out of nowhere. There was one storm last year I fled the area for, just to come back and realize that there wasn't any damage or flooding whatsoever in my complex. I should have just stayed and took my chances.

There are plenty of authentic Mexican food places.

Langley AFB to Norfolk Navy Base is 20 miles. You have to go across the HRBT, which could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

You can find a decent 3 bedroom apartment for $1,000.

Update: My husband is going to be stationed at the base in Newport News, so we will be staying in Langley housing for the first year and then look to buy a house after we get familiar with the area. Again, thanx everyone for the info.

Im assuming you are here already and the Mexican places here are whack compared to So Cal... Most are not Mexican, but other Latin-American joints. I'm from San Diego / Las Vegas, but moved out here.. Actually in NOVA, but looking into Hampton roads area. NOVA is way too busy, moved out here for a slower pace and much cleaner air. Of course so many trees and 4 seasons. Anyways I can not wait to visit home and eat a big carne asada burrito or Nachos for $5.00 with Horchatta.
