I want to visit VA Beach this week just for the day during this good surf period.
I would hate to drive close to 4 hours only to find out it is red flagged.

1) Is there anyway/any website which can display this information so I know before leaving?

2) IF this is the case, is there any place which is not lifeguarded or where you can board/surf even if the flags are out?

Hudlander, the only thing I can think of is check the websites of the local media for updates on the beach conditions. I don't know if I can post their websites or links here, but their call signs are WTKR (the CBS affiliate), WVEC (the ABC affiliate) and WAVY (the NBC affiliate).

The city's website should have some information about the location of the lifeguard stations on the beaches. That's www.vbgov.com.

Good luck and I hope this helps a bit.

Are there any "life guard free" areas where I can go in no matter?

You can surf and bodyboard with the red flags up. If you want to find spots with no lifeguards you can go to the North End (north of 40th street for sure) or you can go to Sandbridge south of the entrance but north of the pier. The lifeguards are also only out until around 5 I think.

The wind has been on it and chopping it up since sunday but there is still some fun surf out there. Near the jetties are the most sheltered from the wind and drift but also the most crowded. Good luck!
