My wife and I have lived in the Coventry subdivision in lower York County since 1996 and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Langley is about 4 miles from Coventry so the commute is 10 minutes or so. Coventry has a wide variety of housing options. 3 & 4 BR single family homes in my section, Davis Forge, sell for $300K-$360K. There are both more expensive and less expensive neighborhoods within Coventry. My wife has taught in York County schools for many years and constantly hears from parents that the schools are one of the main reasons they chose York County. The HOA fees for single family homes are under $50/month and they've done a good job maintaining the common areas. Townhomes are higher because of the maintenance they are responsible for. There are lots of other beautiful neighborhoods in lower York County as well. Be sure to check the flood zones though. Some are in high risk flood zones. Coventry is not unless we get a Cat 5 hurricane and then I think the water will be the least of our worries!

I'll go with the consensus on York County schools as someone who attended from 4th-10th grade. Truth is, you can't find better schools in Hampton Roads or dare I say the Southern half of Virginia. I lived in the Yorkshire Downs subdivison which is right off Rt 134, in a SFH, apartment, and a townhome (mom was wild about staying in Yorkshire Downs.) I really recommend it.

Default Air Force move in June

My husband, my 20 months old and I (+2 indoor cats) are going to be stationed at Langley AFB this June. I'm so new to this whole moving to another town, find a house, find the right neighborhood (flood, crime, Hurricane, rural feel but Short commute to AFB, ...) and researching think that I don't even know to ask the right questions. Any information to get a feel for the area and what to look for is greatly appreciated.

I read through the comments on this topic here and was happy to get ideas on where to look for housing. We are looking for 3-4 BR, 2 car garage, reasonable yard (for kids to play in). We were thinking of renting cause the house prices seemed to be pretty high.
Artistatheart mentioned to have tons of info about the area ( i tell you, I am CLUE LESS to what I am doing . I would be so thankful if you could send me all info you found helpful yourself.

Thanks a lot!

Default Welcome to Langley Australiangirl!

LAFB is a tremendous facility with lots of resources for families. You might want to check out the brand new base housing in Langley's Bethel Manor. Looks very nice and is just a 10 minute commute to the base. Some is still under construction. It is a Huge improvement over the old housing they tore down. It can be hard to find rentals near the base as they tend to go fast in the nicer areas. Back in the 90's when we first moved here, I had missed out on several listings. Just got lucky driving around and saw a realtor putting out a sign! You might want to find a realtor who handles rentals and check into Craig's list as well. Can't recommend a specific realtor as I've not been in that market for a long long time.
Good luck and enjoy your time here in Virginia!
