Moving in May or June to the area. Will be working very close to Naval Hospital Portsmouth. I do not like long commutes and am looking for a large, comfortable apartment or condo with three bedrooms. Will live alone but have kids who will hopefully visit me. I need a one story place hopefully on the ground floor, or with elevator access or minimal stairs. I like places with coffee shops, cafes, bookstores, etc. nearby.

Would appreciate any advice on neighborhoods in Portsmouth or beyond that are safe, reasonable commute, parking available, and have some ammenities nearby. Not on a super tight budget but wanting to save for retirement so don't want to spend more than I have to. I am from the westcoast and have never lived in VA.

Thanks for any advice

First question is, will you be well-armed? There are some areas that you will want to address security concerns...

Try looking at the Myrtles at Olde Town.

I second Olde Towne. It's a great neighborhood with LOTS of history and charm. And High Street has a good number of the amenities you mentioned. I would also look into Port Norfolk. It's not as close to the hospital as Olde Towne, but could still work for you.
