My husband is in the Coast Guard and recently got orders to TRACEN Yorktown and we will be moving to the area in early July. I have researched the area and surrounding communities and have found that Yorktown schools are the best in the area. I was pretty set on moving to the Yorktown area until we were offered the chance to rent a home in Gloucester Point. For me, with three children, good quality schools are the priority. My son would be attending Achilles Elementary which seems like an excellent school. My daughter would be attending Gloucester High which I'm not too sure about. The school has over 1,900 students. On greatschools it got a score of 5 out of 10. So I guess average. But the amount of students seems pretty crowded to me. Considering she will be starting high school for the first time I wanted a school that was a smaller size. How is the high school? Is it overcrowded? If you had a choice would you stick with York County schools or Gloucester?

If you want a small high school, you will have to go private. From what I've seen in my short time living here, all of the public high schools have lots of students. From what I've seen, the smallest high school is Poquoson which according to Wikipedia has about 920 students. My daughter attends Woodside High School in Newport News and it has over 2000 students. She is a freshman. I too was leery of such a big school, but it has worked out fine.

I have been to many of the high schools to attend games. Based on that limited experience and what I've heard, I would take York County over Gloucester.

The general opinion in this area seems to be that York County has the best schools.

Good luck.

As an FYI, the three high schools in James City County/Williamsburg have between 1100 and 1200 students.
