Hello,

I will be moving to Norfolk from Oakland, CA this Summer for school. I found a rental that seems ideal from the pictures and my research, but the rental agency has a no sight unseen policy. They said it would be fine if I have a friend check out the place though. It is not feasible for me to make a trip there, so I was wondering if there is any way people get around this. Are there realtors who will help with this? Would it be too sketchy to put up a craigslist ad offering to hire someone to check out a place for me? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Where's it at? The neighborhood is telling. I wouldn't go the Craigslist route.

The rental is in Ghent and it is listed through a reputable realtor in the area.

Ghent is pretty safe and nice for the most part. There are some Ghent people on here. They could probably tell you from the street if it's okay or not.

Why don't you hire a real estate agent to go look at the place and give you a report. I suspect you can come to an agreement on compensation.

If it's on Westover as I know there are several buildings, that is a good street at least. The apartments I have seen in Ghent have been okay. I would get an apartment in West Ghent west of Hampton Blvd. I lived there in a walk-up and enjoyed it.

If it's one of the newer (newly built) apartment complexes in Ghent. You most likely will be okay with going sight unseen. But if it's one of the older buildings, I would not recommend sight unseen!
