Hello forum,

My husband and I (in our 40's) are looking for a NICE area to live in that is not geared toward families with kids. We don't have kids, and are looking for some peace and quiet in a nice residential area that is upper-middle class. If we rent we are in a $1800 - $2000 monthly rent range, if we buy, $350 - $425K range. We have considered a beach house, but fear the homes are too close to each other for mostly quiet evenings. I think some space, backed up to woods would be perfect. My husband would be working at Norfolk Naval Station, so the tunnel needs to be avoided. South side is where I've been looking. The beach homes are mighty tempting, but being from San Diego, I know the summer element of drunken teenage kids lurking about is really off putting. We don't need to walk to anything, we both have cars. I would love to sit on a back deck admiring the woods, the quiet and the beauty of my own back yard. I know we'd like Ghent, artsy and eclectic is good, quiet woods is good too.... I'm confusing myself at this point. Help?

Check out Courthouse Estates off North Landing Road in Va beach. Some areas have some kids but there are plenty of houses. Also check out Signature at West Neck which is a golf community. Very picturesque.

ghent is a good area,However the ocean front area around sandbridge is very relaxed with some excelent beachfront and near the beach properties. But if your looking for an area without alot of kids and folks who like quite with a nice atmosphere Ghent is where you need to look.

I even think that part of the development of Signature is adults only....

There are some 55 and over neighborhoods but that will not help you much...... Your best bet would be out towards the Hickory section of Chespeake.... Number of three acre lots (and larger) out that way, you will not find any neighborhood without kids but the larger the lot the further you would be away from any noise....you will be a little limited at your price point but should be able to at least find some "Great Bridge specials".

If drunken teenagers (or even older) are "off-putting" I think I'd stay away from Ghent. While it does have an abundance of culture, it's also got a lot of bars/clubs and is not all that far from ODU.

At first I was going to suggest Williamsburg as well, but the commute to/from Norfolk would be a deal breaker.

I agree with looking into Chesapeake, and Suffolk as well.

Thank you everyone for the input, we are seriously considering Suffolk and Chesapeake. I've made a spreadhseet of about 45 homes to look at when we come out next month. We've decided to buy with a price point of 400-500k. Suffolk seems lovely, wooded, slower pace... all those things San Diego and Los Angeles are not I can forgo the beach, we can do the OBX for weekend getaways.
You guys are all great, thank you again so much.
Best
-K

I lived on Cypress Point Golf Course in a condo.... and it was extremely quiet, not many kids around.
