We currently live in NE Suffolk and want to move to an area with better public schools. We've been pointed to Williamsburg by a bunch of people. Completely not tethered to anywhere as my wife is a SAHM and I work virtually or travel.

Took a field trip today up to W'burg and saw Stonehouse Glen, Greensprings West, Wellington, and a couple other new construction communities.

We have a 6 month old and a 5.5 year old headed into 1st grade.

Worth the move? Stonehouse Glen seemed like good house for value but can't find much locally on experience with Ryan Homes. We did like the neighborhood (though wished it was part of the larger Stonehouse HOA and had those amenities).

Just looking for feedback and comments.

One pointed question from anyone with experience with both: Are JCC schools truly that much better than Suffolk Schools?

We had him in NSA for a year and was sort of unimpressed versus cost.

I have worked with many Ryan Home buyers since they entered this market in 2004. All would buy from them again if they had to move. Not that we didn't have issues, but the problems were small and handled promptly in each case. But they aren't for everyone. Just like some prefer Lexus over Hyundai, is a Lexus worth a 25% premium ? For some yes others, no.You get the most square foot per dollar with Ryan over any builder in the area and most resale homes.

As for Stonehouse Glen, again I have sold numerous homes there. It's hard to beat for the setting. Did you see the new clubhouse and pool ? much nicer than the one in the other part of Stonehouse. The one drawback is the distance to major shopping, movie theaters, sports venues for kids.

Are schools better ? Well, about half the folks I sell homes to move from Hampton , Newport News, Suffolk they would say yes. Have you looked at test scores ? Compare all schools in Virginia here

Have you looked at SAT scores ? James City Williamsburg & York combined have six of the top 25 high schools in the region for 2012.

The rankings in order are Jamestown, Tabb, Grafton, Lafayette, Poquoson, York , Gloucester, Warhill. Suffolk is at #17 and #23.

Yes, I did see the SAT scores, I did also notice though that Warhill lagged behind the other 2 James City schools, wondering if just due to new. They also had a substantially less # of AP tests taken (but not that many fewer students).
