Eagle Harbor is a nice neighborhood, but I'm not sure the Isle of Wight schools are great. I think they are better than Suffolk public schools though.

Can you be a more specific as to what you're looking for? Suffolk is a really large city, by area, that has drastically different parts depending on what you're comfortable with.

I would suggest looking in the northern parts of Suffolk. Harborview, Driver, etc. Stay away from the Burbage Grant neighborhood of Harborview however.

For what reason would you stay away from Burbage Grant? It seems to be a fine community, and many others have recommended it here.

I live in Suffolk and while I like the town itself, I have two kids - aged 7 and 4, and I do not recommend this school system if it can be avoided. We lived here before we had kids for many years but we send our kids to private school. My recommendation would be to check the school district you are interested in and work backward for housing. I mean really check it out - I am talking greatschools.org with parent reviews, be prepared to determine what's legit and who has a personal axe to grind, and the standardized testing scores for the schools, as well as their accreditation standings. I really am not attempting to "stir" the education pot, but I am being very honest. We have lived in the area for 13 years and when my husband retires from the military in 3 years, even though we like the Hampton Roads area overall, we will be looking to move to an area with a better school district.

Here is a great link to an article that was in our paper today, it addresses the fact that most of the schools in Norfolk (nearly 70%) will not be receiving full accreditation this year. It mentions that Suffolk schools will have fewer accredited schools and gives the pass rates for testing in the various schools - Suffolk is included in the chart:

http://hamptonroads.com/2013/08/most...-accreditation

Happy house hunting and we do like the area, we have just become extremely discouraged by the local schools...part of the reason we went private.

I agree with HLYNNF. The public schools in Suffolk leave a lot to be desired.
