We are wanting to relocate from Hampton to Virginia Beach. My kids are in private school because of where we are zoned in Hampton. We have been looking in Kempsville because of it's central location to where we work (Chesapeake and Norfolk). Used to work in NN when we bought the house but now commute to Chesapeake.

We heard Kempsville schools were great but when I started digging into SOL scores from the state, the Kempsville schools were mainly toward the bottom compared to the rest of the city.

Kings Grant/Great Neck are out of our price range for the most part even though those schools performed the best on SOLs.

We can't afford to buy in Kempsville and still send them to private school so it's either send them both to pubic school and buy a decent house or buy a crappier house the same size and twice the price we paid for our current house and keep sending them to private.

Not an easy decision. Need VB schools for the gifted education options.

Thanks.

Here's a link to the school district website that discusses their advanced education programs.

This link talks about the Gifted Education services.

I hope these help a bit.

If you want to research VB schools I think this is the best way. The city compiles all of the data nicely in this report card.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools - Annual School Report Card Archives

I don't know now for sure now because I graduated years ago and none of my friends kids are older than 10, but Kempsville schools were very good during the 90's and early 2000's and VB in general offers a lot of options in terms of gifted programs and specialty tracks.

Although the schools them self are old (biggest complaint I hear, slated for renovations soon IIRC), Kempsville certainly isn't a bad school district as it is surrounded by nice communities with middle/upper middle class families for the most part. Your child will have ample opportunity to succeed there... If your children are younger there is also the Old Donation center and Kemps Landing Magnet if they qualify.

When looking at SOL scores remember the tests have been changed to make them harder, so the scores across the board have been lower than in the past.
