You can plant prickly type plants around things that could be used to climb up or over. If you don't usually have guests and want to be more creative, try making an area for keeping black snakes as they can naturally be found in the area, won't bother you, and can deter persons from poking around. Further, try adding some unusual-looking ground features with occultic symbols - this will eliminate some people from choosing your property right off the bat. And speaking of bats, if you live near a body of water, you can even build a simple bat house and have them around too. All of this should take care of the outside. For windows - build inside shutters out of plywood and lock with large barrel bolts. When someone gets up to the window to break in, they will be very discouraged by seeing a solid barrier just behind the glass.

ps. Glass sliding-doors are a huge risk factor and should be eliminated entirely. Anyone planning to enter with the most basic tools will not be stopped by a bar on the floor. This will only keep the casual visitor from opening the door.
Goodness even the worst "hood" here doesn't need all that.

OP lock your doors, and stay smart. Crime is not rampent around here unless you live in Hampton. Then you need to watch out because they seem to be in the middle of a wave of homicides.

I can't think of any houses around here that have them. Criminals don't climb through windows do they? Usually it's a back door that's broken into.

If you have a yard, don't leave anything of value outside, unless it's too big or heavy to take easily. Bikes and scooters can be ridden away quickly, so they are especially vulnerable to theft. Don't leave your garage or shed door open, even in the daytime, because around here an open door is an invitation for somebody to walk in and help themselves to anything they find. (two people I know lost expensive bicycles this way)

I used a Phase Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range. Once I vaporized one or two hood rats the rest left me alone.

Actually they just broke into my car. My little duplex on 42nd (right by ODU) had bars on the windows and a heavy door.
