Does it really go from Norfolk? I have taken Amtrak to NN (last time last year) but the NN-Norfolk leg was a smelly greyhound bus.

It does go from Norfolk. They are building a new station near Harbor Park.

I've used it to go to DC and it's nice. Not much of a difference than getting it from Newport News, except no bus service or driving to NN first (I live in Norfolk). I think the station will be done soon, but I believe right now it's only the platform that is open, so most people sit in their cars until the train comes.

The station is almost done I don't know the exact date of opening but last I saw they were just putting the finishing touches on i.e. Cleaning windows.

Cool. I have gone on the train round trip to visit my family in Ashland VA from Springfield MA. So I have ridden from Ashland to Penn Station. However now that I know there is a station in Norfolk, when I go down to visit I might hop the train to Norfolk just to check out places as I am thinking of moving to VA eventually.

Goodness I just looked at the cost. I doubt I'll be taking the train anywhere.

Guess it depends where u are going and when. I'm going to DC from Springfield MA in May, 2014. I bought the ticket already, and it cost me $124 roundtrip.

From Now intill Jan 1st Amtrak prices go up along with usage.... During the Thanksgiving Week they carry about 1.7 million just in the Northeast US. Once the New Year rolls around and you book in advanced at least 3 weeks , you should be able to find a cheap roundtrip.
