You're goin' back my man.. There was a Mother's at the front of Pembroke Mall.. is that the one you're remembering (?) It had an exterior covered in red carpet.. It's been gone for a minute, If I'm remembering right it folded in the early 90s.
I think there might've been one upstairs at Lynnhaven too, but it's hard for me to remember.

Another cool local record shop was Electric Smiles out in Kempsville. He had a lot of punk & hardcore vinyl and 45s back in the early 90s.. (anyone remember him ?)

Thank goodness for Birdland.
I liked the old look. Had more character. I do notice that the entire store seemed to be on sale, perpetually. I'm not surprised it is half the size, I don't think the way they had it previously was sustainable. They're probably earning more per square foot, than they did when the store was a lot larger. Wasn't it like, three times the size it is now? The developer can probably charge more in rent, and maximize that initial investment.

On an off note, I think that old seventies through nineties aesthetic of VB retail is disappearing. May have ended with the old FX building.

I was stunned when I walked in there for the first time in over two years. I almost walked out, thinking I had the wrong store. I liked it when it retained the size and look of Planet Music but now it's utterly lacking in any character. The once huge metal section is tiny - not worth the trip there now.
