My family is moving to the hampton roads area after many years overseas and i am overwhelmed with choices. Help me narrow it down! Here is what we are looking at:

Wants - we can spend up to 1mil, need good public schools for kids from kinder to high school, would like a safe family-friendly neighborhood where the kids can play outside. We very much want there to be at least some shops, stores and restaurants to walk to. Water views or proximity to ocean is, of course, a plus. Good running/biking trails nearby would be great.

Dont wants - house in the country, place where you need to drive to get anywhere, neighborhood with no kids, neighborhood that is mostly rentors or secoond homes, huge house that i am stuck cleaning all the time, daily traffic frustration.

No commute necessary as we work from home. I've been looking at va beach as that is where we lived before, but would be willing to go anywhere in the area.

Where should i be looking? Help!!

The only place I can think of that would satisfy all of those needs would be someplace near the intersection of great neck and shore dr. Close to the beach, good schools, right next to first landing with great trails, and a reasonable amount of restaurants and shops to walk/bike to. Good luck, with that budget you can pretty much live anywhere around here.

Check out the Alanton Elementary area of Virginia Beach. The neighborhood is very family friendly with big trees and windy roads. It's close to hilltop (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, various shops and restaurants) and also not far from First Landing State Park, the oceanfront or the bay.
