Thanks Sad Irish!! That makes me so excited. Beach bars, a number 2 school district, and a boardwalk to run that lasts forever, and plenty of gyms sound fabulous!! Yeah, can't compare to NY pizza, just going to accept that now. Thanks Linsey1151 and Randomlikeme

There are people who like country music here; however, I grew up in the VB punk/indie scene and this has not been indicative of my experience of the area. I met many who enjoyed a wide variety of music and there were few close-minded country only folks, except for transplants from other areas (ie. a roommate I had who was originally from Michigan).

This area is unique in that most of the people living there are really from somewhere else.

I fell in love with country music in the last year or so so that actually has me very excited that there is a big country fan base VB. Does the area have a big southern feel? Or at least enough of a contrast compared to the NY area? I know this isnt related to my original question but just figured I would ask

I would say half and half since some people have southern accents and carry confederate flags and alot of people from the north and also alot of people are in the military so theres mixed people. Also strangely there are alot of people from California here!

In high school, I listened to a lot of The Shins, The Decemberists, The Mars Volta, Reel Big Fish, Radiohead, Pavement, Bright Eyes, The Toadies, Millencolin, Social Distortion. I'd also listen to a lot of weird Can-eh-dian alternative bands like Matthew Good, I Mother Earth, and Our Lady Peace.

In my day (circa 10 years ago), there was a decent local hardcore scene that would play at Gil's,Peppermint Beach Club, ,The Half Shell, H20, or this independent record store that used to be near the Lynnhaven Mall (I think it was called Volume, but I can't remember). There were some pretty good local bands back then and some of these folks are still around. There are also some pretty decent local bands I've seen playing at Belmont House of Smoke and The Taphouse. The sad thing is that most of the local scene was based around playing in bars so there were usually age restrictions on local shows.
