My husband and I are moving from Fairfax County, where I feel pretty safe doing my long runs in the pre-dawn (starting around 0400/0430) hours. He will be working at the Norfolk Naval Station, and we're looking at renting for about a year somewhere in Portsmouth. We have twins, but they're still infants so we're not really concerned about schools yet.

What I'm more concerned about is safety for long runs/walks on sidewalks; I run about 6-8 miles per day, and I also take the babies out for 30 minute walks. Portsmouth would definitely give my husband a great commute (especially compared with his 2 hr drive here in NoVA), and we hope to find a house to rent in one of the safer, family-friendly parts of the area.

Can anyone recommend safe neighborhoods within Portsmouth that are big enough for a long 6-8 mile run? I'm hoping to avoid having to drive somewhere to find a good running area... but if we have to consider other towns (Chesapeake, Suffolk) to have a good, safe place to log miles, we would do so. Thanks.

If you are talking about NAS in Norfolk it would be better to stay on that side of the tube to avoid tolls now. If you still want to be on Portsmouth side or youre talking about Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth then, River Pointe is a nice quiet area where people do a lot of walking/jogging...anywhere along West Norfolk Rd. on that side of Portsmouth, Cedar Rd. also. There is Western Branch North on that side of Chesapeake and in North Suffolk there is the Hampton Roads Crossing/ Respass Beach area. There are a few more areas depending on which way youre traveling and what type of housing your looking for Apt./Condo/Townhouse/House...those areas have pretty much each of those types of housing.

I'm in Western Branch section of Chesapeake (Dock Landing) and I run about 5 miles daily at around 0330. I see my neighbors walking and running at all hours day and night.

Will you be participating in the Rock and Roll half marathon in VA Beach on Sunday? I am driving up from SC.

You might want to look at Chesapeake. I hope you find an area that you like. Best wishes with your move.
