Hi All,

My girlfriend and are I looking to leave Long Island NY within the year and have began doing research on where to relocate. Any suggestions on where to focus my search would be great. So far we are very interested in Charleston but are curious about VA as well.

- Proximity to water: We'd love to be within a short drive to the beach, 30 mins max
- Job market/economy: I work in health care so being close to a large hospital would be ideal. Also we are curious the salaries between VA and Charleston?
- Environment: We want to live in the suburbs, but would love to be able to walk to stores and shops, maybe a town.
- We don't have kids so schooling isn't important
- We are very active and 30 years old, so having near by trails and out door activities would be great

Northern VA! Hampton roads can be fun during the summer but is really boring during the wintertime.

Thanks for the quick reply! Where particularly should I look in northern VA to get what I'm looking for?

I'll disagree with the "boring" part.

There is still a lot to do in the winter season in Hampton Roads. Remember, the locals are bombarded with tourists through the summer months. It's often only in the fall/winter that locals are able to enjoy all the area has to offer. The Historic Triangle (Jamestown-Yorktown-Williamsburg), Virginia Beach waterfront, lots of "post-season" festivals, museums, off-Broadway shows, concerts...anything that any other metropolitan area offers with less cost of living and better weather.

From what I can gather cost of living is higher in Charleston (but I would have loved to live there too), and the cost of living in NoVA is crazy high. It seems you can have more disposable income in Hampton Roads and still have southern charm and lots to do.

There are several hospital options in Hampton Roads as well as EVMS in Norfolk.
