my name is Michelle and I would like to know if anyone knows of any apartments in the Hampton/ Newport News area that do not do credit checks. I am trying to relocate from North Carolina to Virginia due to a job and my credit is bad.

I don't know any that don't do credit checks. Are you working on cleaning up your credit? is there a "story" like you lost a job and it was dismal for these x months but now we are getting it together? when you are inquiring into an apartment, be up front. Have you ever been evicted? hopefully not.... can you get a reference from your current landlord? that will help. Can you pay an additional amount towards security? like first and last months rent and one months security? that may help.

good luck.

shelly

You may be better off finding a private renter and going from there. Private renters are more willing to take a chance on you if you have a job offer letter saying you'll have the means to pay the rent. Plus you may end up in a nicer place for the same amount of money.

Like posted, just be up front about your situation when applying for an apartment. If your making enough money and can make a higher deposit, Im sure there is a place out here somewhere for you. I cant really speak to finding a private owner. When I was looking for an apartment I did extensive looking (realtors, craigslist, trading post, sunday paper, and driving around) and I couldnt really find anything.

A private renter; either someone that is trying to get someone to pay off their mortgage, or an extremely old property that is already paid off, and some management company is just trying to make a few bucks off of it. I used to find listings on Craigslist I would definitely check there. Those apartment guides won't be of much help, so don't even waste your time.

But to be totally honest, you're probably paying a lot more month to month (or a higher deposit), than you would otherwise. I have been fortunate in that I never had a credit check in this area. One apartment I took over from a renter that couldn't afford it, so one person was taken off of the lease and another was added to it. I paid the lease for a while but got sick of the commute, so I eventually left and moved closer to work.

Another option (though expensive) might be an extended stay where you're essentially never leaving a motel. You might end up paying a few hundred every week (or two) but there isn't any credit check. A lot of people do that until they get into a better situation. It would be tight, but you could do that for a while, pay off your bills and improve your credit score, and then move into a regular apartment. I did that too, but I only stayed for a few months and moved into the aforementioned situation.

No credit check 3 bedroom dollhouse

$3,000 down, for the whole house.

Newport News Lease Option! $3,000 Down! No Credit Check!

This is a studio, pretty high at $1,000, but there is no credit check

Great Studio Efficiencies

The minimum stay is 60 days. The ad also talks about "booking" through them, so that is probably some type of extended stay. So you do have a few options. They're not cheap, but there are no credit check living situations available, you just might end up having to put more down upfront.

I would suggest placing an ad on Craigslist in the housing wanted section and let potential private owners contact you. That is how I found my last two places and it was great. No credit check and I get to pay via bank transfer. People will contact you with good offers that are not listed on the site. Good luck with your search.

Having worked for a property management company, I will tell you.... your credit can be bad, but your past rental history shouldn't any money owed to a landlord where he has taken you to collections and you can't have an eviction. As long as that's fine, you can rent at most management companies.
