It depends what kind of boating you are looking for. Suffolk has many small lakes that will not allow more than a jon boat with a 9.9 hp or less. There is the Nansemond River, and a little drive to the Chesapeake Bay or the Intercoastal Waterway. Or if you are looking for big water, about 30 min from the Atlantic. The only thing the area is really missing is a large freshwater lake. Closest is probally Lake Gaston in NC.

I work part time in Isle of Wight and EVERYBODY has a boat (not everybody exactly, but you know what I mean).
As you travel down Rt 17 through Isle of Wight and Carrolton from Suffolk you will cross 3 bridges over rivers and there are always boats out there. There is also a boat storage and Marine shop at 664 and 17 - as well as several other marinas in that same general area.

I crew for a couple of sailboats. There are races in the spring and fall on Friday evenings. They are sponsored by the Portsmouth Boat Club. Lots of sailing fun.

I know that is troubling that you have to do that these days..

Raced on a J24 last year under light winds....not too happy with the results.

I was on a 40' Columbia (1965) Nepenthe. We got a first place in Cruising II, our sixth try.

Way to go, I was on the Pleione, we got set while trying to avoid a collision with a huge cargo ship, never could get caught up as the wind died down. We did poorly.
