Pasquotank County is strongly opposed to having I-87 follow the proposed connector route. They want I-87 to stay on US-17. VDOT has also begun it's study of Virginia's portion of I-87. NCDOT has completed and posted it’s feasibility study (dated October 2018) for the US-17 portion of the I-87 corridor between Williamston and the Virginia state line. No word yet on when VDOT’s study of VA’s part of the corridor will be finished.

After looking at the somewhat meandering alignment of I-87, I think it’s unfortunate that VDOT isn’t prioritizing an Interstate upgrade of US 58 between South Hill and Chesapeake. That alignment is more direct than US 17, and promises better access between Hampton Roads and other areas of the Southeast (e.g., Charlotte, Greenville/Spartanburg, Atlanta).

That alignment would be best if the goal was to provide better access between HR and the metro areas of the Carolinas. But the goal of I-87 just seems to be an economic development project for eastern NC. It won't really improve Norfolk-Raleigh travel time. It'll just let economic development agencies in some downtrodden eastern NC towns market their access to a two-digit interstate.
